She was also alone in his company at various locations in Limerick and Clare. The trial heard distressing evidence from the victim, who is now 20, that the sexual contact escalated to such an extent that she ended up “just giving in”.“I never let him fully have sex with me but he did put his penis in my vagina and finger me. He would do it before I could say anything really. He did it several times and very often it was every week or more.”During the three-year period of abuse, the girl asked Casey why he did those things only to be told that he was doing it for later on in life and “to teach me sexual things”.Details of offences that happened in a nearby forest park and a disused factory were also described in great detail by the girl.“I realised what was going on but I was still young and vulnerable at that age”, she explained, adding that sexual incidents with Casey almost “became routine”.The day she started her Junior Certificate examinations, Casey was to bring her to school but he tried to have sex with her.“I screamed and got him off. I ran off crying and he still had to bring me to school. I sat through my exams but it was horrible. She said that incidents would also happen inside a van and at various locations in Limerick and Clare.“I was basically just a dummy, I didn’t say or do much as I was so young and was having this older man do this to me”.During tearful exchanges of cross examination with defence barrister Coleman Cody SC, the victim said that she tried to distance herself from Casey towards the end of December 2011.In January 2012, Casey left Ireland for West Africa and on January 27, she posted an entry into her diary, “It’s out now after I confided in someone, Michael Casey has been molesting me for the last three years.”Prosecution Counsel John O’Sullivan said that the matters came to light when the victim confided in a school friend, who told her school guidance counsellor and principal. The girl’s mother was immediately contacted and Gardaí were brought in to investigate.Following interviews with specialist investigators, Detective Garda Patrick Hogan took a statement of complaint from the victim and Casey was later arrested and questioned. He denied all the allegations and said that the girl was “simply making it up, it’s all a fantasy”.He accepted he had regular contact with her but denied ever having sex with her. He described the victim as being a deeply troubled young girl and said that the allegations “was not her language”.“It never happened it’s all lies, it’s all fantasy, it’s all rubbish”, he told Detective Garda Hogan. The victim was examined four days after the incidents came to light and it was found that her hymen had been torn.An application to remand the 71-year-old in custody was refused, but Judge O’Donnell directed that Gardai were to take his passport as a condition of bail. His name is also to be added to the sex offenders register.Michael Casey is to be sentenced o March 29 and can face up to life imprisonment for the defilement of a child. Syracuse beats Louisville in extra innings, ends 4-game losing streak

first_imgComing into its matchup with Louisville, Syracuse had dropped four-consecutive games, losing by a combined score of 33-2.But on Sunday, clutch hitting from Gabby Teran, Neli Casares-Maher, Toni Martin and Hannah Dossett secured a 4-2 extra-inning win. Syracuse (9-16, 1-2 Atlantic Coast) also needed a 159-pitch, complete-game effort from ace Alexa Romero to outlast Louisville (19-8, 2-1 ACC).To lead off the top of the eighth inning, sophomore Casares-Maher launched a fastball to left field for a stand-up double. Dossett drove her in with a blast that was about six inches from clearing the left field fence. Dossett had been struggling, going hitless in the previous four games, but her RBI double gave SU a 3-2 lead. Dossett scored on the next pitch off a Martin single up the middle, and Romero closed out the win.The Orange had a prime opportunity to avoid extras. With a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, Louisville’s Caitlin Ferguson hit a soft liner up the middle with one out, giving Syracuse a chance at a routine double play. Teran, the second baseman, fielded the ball cleanly, stepped on second, and fired a strike to first. The double play would’ve ended the game, but first baseman Alex Acevedo missed stepping the bag, allowing the Cardinals to send the game into extra innings.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textSusie Teuscher | Digital Design EditorBefore Louisville scored on the error, the game was tied, 1-1, with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Teran then took an outside fastball the other way, sending a line drive to right field. Her single on a 2-2 count scored Lailoni Mayfield from second.Syracuse originally established a lead in the first. With two outs, senior Alicia Hansen reached on an infield single hit toward UofL’s pitcher. Hansen then stole second and continued around the bases to score on two Louisville errors. Hansen’s aggressive baserunning had given SU an advantageThe next four innings went scoreless, but Romero struggled with her control. She walked one batter in the second inning, and put two on base in the fourth. She’d finish with six walks in her outing.Romero’s control caught up to her in the fifth inning, as she consistently fell behind in counts. Two singles and a sacrifice fly later, and Louisville tied the game, 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth.Louisville nearly cracked open the game in the next frame, if not for Teran’s glove. From second base, Teran tracked back into right field, where Taylor Roby hit a soft line drive. Right fielder Bryce Holmgren dove for it, but Roby’s hit snuck under her glove. Teran, backing up Holmgren in deep right field, picked up the ball and threw a laser to second base, taking away a leadoff double from Louisville. Romero got the next two batters out to end the inning and eliminate the danger. In the end, Romero struck out eight Cardinals and allowed two earned runs to help Syracuse hand Louisville its first home loss. The Rockets Are Finally Playing Their Game In The Playoffs

The strangest thing about the Houston Rockets’ 126-99 dismantling of the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night wasn’t the final score, or the Spurs’ bloodless play, or even the 50 3-pointers (and 22 makes) that Houston threw up in the game. Those were all unusual, but in the way that any one-off game in a seven-game series might be. For Rockets fans, however, the big change was that for once in the playoffs, the Rockets looked like the Rockets.Over the last four seasons,1The period for which we have player-tracking data for the league. Houston general manager Daryl Morey has built the NBA’s model of efficiency. The Rockets of the regular season adhere to the fundamental tenets of Moreyball: shooting threes, driving for layups and drawing fouls. Then the playoffs begin. That’s when Houston has gone off script and played the sort of inefficient basketball it’s built to avoid. It’s unlikely that the Rockets will play the rest of the series at the level they played Game 1 — the 27-point loss was the worst of the Spurs’ season. But however the series plays out, it’s progress that the Rockets have finally brought Rockets basketball to the playoffs. The biggest change has been in the number of threes the team gets. Over the previous three seasons, the Rockets led the league in 3-point attempt rate (the share of field-goal attempts that are 3-pointers) during the regular season before seeing significant dropoffs in the postseason. That’s particularly unusual, considering the playoff field as a whole had a higher rate in this span than the leaguewide regular-season rate. This season, the Rockets have seen a similar slide toward the mean. But they began with such an overwhelming cushion that although they’ve gone from 46.2 percent of their attempts being threes during the season to 40.3 being so in the playoffs, that 40.3 number would have led all teams during the regular season. It’s especially promising for the Rockets’ identity that they’ve continued to put up shots even though they haven’t been falling. In the Oklahoma City series, Houston shot 28 percent from three over five games and 169 attempts, including 6-for-37 in the series clincher. This was somewhat because of good coverage — the Thunder held the Rockets to 10 uncontested2No defender within 6 feet. threes per game, five fewer than their regular season average — but mostly it was just a cold spell that seems to have corrected itself. Against the Spurs in Game 1, the Rockets got 14 wide-open threes, right around their season average.Houston’s free-throw rate (a team’s number of free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt) hasn’t seen as consistent a downturn in the playoffs as its 3-pointers, but it’s fluctuated. The team has finished in the top two in each of the last four regular seasons, but the fouls dried up in its 2014 and 2016 playoff campaigns. Through six games this postseason, however, the team is drawing free throws at by far the highest rate in the field. read more

Football Binjimen Victor steps up after Macks injury

Ohio State junior wide receiver Binjimen Victor (9) catches a pass in the second half of the game against Purdue on Oct. 20. Ohio State lost 49-20. Credit: Casey Cascaldo | Photo EditorNext man up.It’s been the mentality of the defensive line, with the loss of junior All-American defensive end Nick Bosa for the rest of the season. The Ohio State secondary has needed the phrase as well, with redshirt junior cornerback Damon Arnette failing to make the trip to Purdue last Saturday because of injury. Now, that phrase has made its way to the offense. Junior wide receiver Austin Mack suffered a foot injury in the second half of Saturday’s 49-20 loss to Purdue. On his weekly radio show, head coach Urban Meyer called Mack’s ailment a “fluke injury,” saying it was a non-contact injury and he was “twisted wrong on the field.” However, Meyer did give some hope, saying Mack could be back in time for postseason play. But moving forward, it’s back to the “next man up” mentality. In Mack’s absence, junior wide receiver Binjimen Victor will take the majority of his snaps in his place. Through eight games, Victor has 236 yards on 14 catches, recording three touchdown receptions. Even though Ohio State has older depth at the wide receiver position, with redshirt senior wide receivers Johnnie Dixon and Terry McLaurin splitting time at the other receiver slot, offensive coordinator Ryan Day said its Victor’s time to shine. “Ben’s got to step up and he’s now got to mature into a role where he’s going to be the starter over there,” Day said. However, that does not mean that McLaurin and DIxon will not be there to help in terms of picking up Mack’s production. Day said Ohio State has older players that know the offensive system very well, saying he will move some guys around if necessary. But Victor is not the only one with a statement to make in the absence of Mack. After recording two catches for 27 yards in three games during his true freshman season, now-sophomore wide receiver Jaylen Harris, a former four-star prospect, will have increased playing time with Mack shelved. Day called Mack’s injury Harris’ time to step up, calling for more from the Cleveland native. In four games this season, Harris has recorded two catches for 22 yards, bringing in one 16-yard catch against Oregon State. Meyer said Mack’s injury will also give freshman wide receiver Chris Olave, who has recorded two catches for 14 yards this season, an opportunity to get more playing time as well. However, make no mistake, Day and Meyer both agree that Victor is a starting receiver as Mack gets healthy. This is something Victor has been striving for ever since he got to Ohio State. Victor has shown it in bursts, bringing in two catches for 55 yards and a touchdown against Penn State and five catches for 67 yards against Purdue. After the 2018 Spring Game, Meyer highlighted the expectation he had of Victor going into the fall. “That’s one of the most talented receivers we have ever had,” Meyer said. “It’s consistency and the fight in those kind of things because when he does, it’s fun to watch.”Now, Victor is not the next man up. He is the man. read more

Portugal stick with Fernando Santos as head coach

first_imgThe Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) have decided to retain Fernando Santos as the head coach of the national team, despite their early World Cup exitFollowing their triumphant campaign in the European championship two years ago, Portugal arrived at Russia with a new crop of young promising players beginning to emerge with their captain and all-time record goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo still at the peak form. But the Navigators fell below expectations and, after finishing as Group B runners-up, they were handed an early exit after losing to Uruguay in the last-16.But, despite the disappointing World Cup campaign, FPF President Fernando Gomes has decided to retain Santos and they will now be turning their focus on to defending their European title in two years time.Cristiano Ronaldo, PortugalAli Daei wouldn’t be upset if Ronaldo breaks his scoring record Andrew Smyth – September 13, 2019 Iranian legend Ali Daei wouldn’t be upset to lose his record as international football’s all-time record scorer to the “great” Cristiano Ronaldo.“Everything has to go according to the plan. We decided to extend the contract of Fernando Santos till 2020 after our victory at Euro 2016. It was a well-considered decision,” said Gomes, according to FourFourTwo.“We understood all the perspectives and analyzed the problems, when we were making this decision. We took into account the fact that the World Cup would take place in 2018.”Since his appointment in 2014, Santos has since guided Portugal to their European triumph in 2016 and a third-place finish at the 2017 Confederations Cup.Portugal will now begin with their preparations for the UEFA Nations League, which begins in September.last_img read more
