Deep connection: Virus takes India’s spiritual retreats online

first_imgAt a remote hillside retreat in northern India, Tibetan Buddhist nun Tenzin Drolma usually holds intimate, face-to-face classes — but since the coronavirus pandemic forced them online, her lessons have been packed with people seeking inner peace under lockdown.Drolma had expected around 100 students to join her free video course, the usual size of drop-in sessions at the meditation center that is closed because of the pandemic. So she was surprised when more than 1,000 people from 57 countries signed up, a fifth of whom had no experience with Buddhism. Topics : Calm in anxious timesReligious rituals are being performed behind closed doors worldwide, with mosques, churches and other spiritual sites closed and the Pope even live-streaming his Easter blessing.Along the sacred River Ganges, as a light breeze blows and birds fly past in the background, instructors from Parmarth Niketan ashram lead yogis around the world in sun salutations and other postures. The center in Rishikesh, a city in the Himalayan foothills renowned as the world center of yoga, is also closed and is holding live sessions online.Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati, who lives at the ashram, is hopeful its spiritual practices will help people feel “grounded”.”We realized that we need to give as much as we can to our global community to keep them healthy physically, stress-free, anxiety-free,” Saraswati, a Californian who settled in Rishikesh 25 years ago, told AFP from the ashram.Despite the severe economic threat of India’s lockdown, both Parmarth Niketan and Tushita are confident they can weather the financial storm, while providing spiritual guidance to their followers old and new.For Indian actor Akkshay Dogra, who has attended a retreat at Tushita, taking part in the classes from his home in Mumbai has compelled him to immediately apply the teachings.”Whatever I am learning, I am living it right now… these skills are given to you and then you go out and deal with the world,” he said.”I really hope they are able to do this course online for as long as they can… It’s a great service to humanity.” The Chicago-born teacher told AFP she tries to set up her laptop in the prayer hall at Tushita Meditation Centre to be as similar as possible to a real-life lesson.”I think that makes it as real as when I have actual people there,” she said from the retreat in Dharamsala, the home of the exiled Dalai Lama.India, the world’s second-most populous nation with 1.3 billion people, is under a nationwide lockdown until at least May 3 to combat the spread of the COVID-19.Some 6,000 kilometers away in Norfolk in eastern England — also under lockdown — one student is sitting on the floor with her eyes closed. “It really helps me to sort of get out of my own head a little bit,” said Emma Roache, who calls herself a transformational coach.”Just to find that peace and breathe and know that I’m not alone,” said Roache, who had to cancel a trip to India in March after the pandemic hit.last_img read more

Indonesia aims to attract 2.5 million visitors to Dubai Expo pavilion

first_img“We will exhibit and promote trade, tourism and investment with Indonesia [at the pavilion], as well as introduce our Golden Indonesia 2045 Vision,” he said during the broadcasted Indonesia’s pavilion mascot and logo unveiling event on Thursday, referring to Indonesia’s 100-year independence milestone.President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has instructed his ministers to take advantage of the event to expand Indonesia’s trade partnership, especially with emerging economies in the Middle East and the Africa region, according to the minister. The statement came as the country struggled with slowing global trade as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Indonesia’s total exports from January to August stood at US$103.16 billion, a 6.51 percent year-on-year (yoy) drop from the same period last year, Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data shows. Imports, meanwhile, fell by 18.06 percent yoy to $92.11 billion in the same period.Indonesia’s trade value with the UEA fell by 19.96 percent yoy to $1.68 billion between January and July this year, Trade Ministry data shows. In the same period, Indonesian exports to the UEA fell by 10.1 percent yoy and imports by 26.52 percent yoy. Indonesia is targeting to attract 2.5 million visitors to its pavilion in one of the oldest global events, the World Expo, which will be held in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), next year, as it aims to boost cooperation in trade and investment with Middle Eastern and African countries.Trade Minister Agus Suparmanto reiterated on Thursday that Indonesia would still participate in the event, which is held every five years, despite a year-long postponement to October 2021 from this year, due to the COVID-19 global crisis. The event is scheduled to last until March 2022.Indonesia is set to have a 3,000-square-meter pavilion, joining 192 participating countries that will promote their tourism, culture, economy and technological achievements, Agus said. The Indonesian pavilion is set to combine the futuristic and the traditional, according to the Trade Ministry. Last year, Indonesia’s trade value with the UEA reached $3.65 billion, with exports of $1.47 billion and imports of $2.18 billion. Most of the exported products were jewelry, cars and other motor vehicles for transport and palm oil, among other items. From January to July, Indonesia also booked a 23.84 percent decrease yoy in trade value with Saudi Arabia at $2.27 billion, with exports falling by 8.46 percent yoy and imports by 30 percent.Agus said the expo’s postponement has disrupted Indonesia’s trade mission to the region.Read also: Indonesia finalizing ‘travel corridor’ with UAEThe ministry previously set a target to export $1.46 billion worth of products to the UAE and $1.7 billion to Saudi Arabia to offset oil and gas trade deficits with the countries.“Of course, there have been disruptions to our mission [as a result of the delay]. However, I’m optimistic that with the postponement, the event will be more flexible and we could do more business matching and trade deals,” he said.UAE Ambassador to Indonesia Abdullah Salem Obeid Al Dhaheri assured during the unveiling event that the expo would take place next year and the UAE government aimed to attract 24 million visitors during the event.“The UAE is working hard to make Expo Dubai a prominent platform to showcase human achievements in many fields with more than 200 countries, companies, organizations and educational institutions,” he said in a speech.Topics :last_img read more

Ohio Ag Weather and Forecast, January 7, 2019

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest No change in our nearby and macro thoughts this morning, but we are going to be making some timing adjustments and the result will be a longer dry window in-between systems, even as our pattern shifts colder. No change in the thought process today. We have a front that will cross the state later today, and it will bring rain. The moisture is a little slow in its arrival vs our forecast last week. In fact, rain really does not get going in many areas until late this afternoon and tonight. However, once rain starts, it comes in two waves, one late this afternoon through the overnight tonight, and then a second through the day tomorrow.  We expect 36 hour rain totals (everything done by late tomorrow night or early Wednesday morning) to be up towards half an inch, although those half inch numbers will be limited to a very small percentage of the state.. On top of that, we will see very gusty winds, averaging 15-30 mph all day long today out of the southwest…this will take temps up to above normal levels again, and ensure that we see all liquid precipitation here. The map at right shows precipitation totals through midnight tomorrow. Clouds will give way to sun on Wednesday, and we should turn colder with strong north winds at 10-20 mph. Then we stay dry and cool for Thursday and Friday. The threat of precipitation at the end of the week stays mostly south, prompting the change from our forecast late last week. The weekend is mostly dry too, but warmer, as south winds return. The change may trigger some clouds for Saturday, but nothing overly dramatic. High pressure settles in for next Monday with a colder push again, and we ride those dry coattails for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week as well. Tuesday will stay cold, but Wednesday we see a final bump up in temps, ahead of our next system. The extended period remains active. WE see rain for Thursday and Friday of next week, bringing .25-1” of liquid potential. Currently, the moisture all looks to come in the form of rain, as cold air does not arrive until the weekend. But, that cold air arrival also triggers snow, with a combined action for Saturday and Sunday (19th and 20th) of several inches of snow. After a pause Monday morning (21st) we have more snow potential for Monday night through Tuesday the 22nd. So, after our system today and tomorrow, we end up with nearly a week’s worth of dry weather, but then winter tries to come back with a vengeance. WE continue to see a much colder second half of January, and snow potential ramps up too.last_img read more

Novak Djokovic can tap into Andre Agassi’s brilliant mind, says John McEnroe

first_imgNovak Djokovic’s decision to work with American great Andre Agassi at the French Open could be an inspired move as he seeks to recover his lost spark, according to John McEnroe. The Serb’s insatiable appetite for grand slam titles appears to have waned since he won last year’s French Open to take his career haul to 12 with motivational issues and niggling injuries contributing to a surprising slump in form.He split with his entire coaching team earlier this month but announced after losing to Alexander Zverev in the Italian Open final on Sunday that eight-times major champion Agassi would be advising him during the Roland Garros fortnight. It is 47-year-old Agassi’s first taste of coaching at the top level and he follows the likes of Ivan Lendl, Boris Becker, Michael Chang and McEnroe himself into the players’ box.”I was surprised, I had not heard any indication that Andre was looking to coach,” seven-times grand slam champion McEnroe, who worked with Canadian Milos Raonic at Wimbledon last year as he reached the final, told Reuters.”As far as being a brilliant tennis mind, and I know him well enough to know that he is, he loves the game and will leave no stone unturned as far as preparing for matches goes.”Agassi bloomed again after a mid-career slump that took him from world number one to outside the top 100 in 1997 and he returned to win the 1999 French Open and U.S. Open.Taking his game to another level he went on to claim two Australian Opens after his 30th birthday, the last coming in 2003 when he was aged 32 and eight months.advertisementWith Djokovic having just turned 30 himself, McEnroe can see parallels in their careers.”Andre had a renaissance later in his career, into his 30s where he had success late in his career,” McEnroe, who will be imparting his wisdom for Eurosport during the French Open, said.”With Novak sort of hitting that peak by winning the French last year he has talked about some issues off court, some motivational issues, so perhaps Andre can give him an insight into an avenue, a way where to be more easily fired up.”If his mind is into it he is going to win more majors.”DEEP THINKERSDjokovic and Agassi are deep thinkers about the sport and McEnroe said that their partnership, however long it lasts, can be a meeting of minds.”First of all, Andre can bring a great respect. He’s one of the greatest players ever. To be around someone like that will be fun for Novak,” McEnroe said.”Andre analysed the game really well from the times I spoke to him. He had that resurgence when he reached his 30s and added a couple of grand slam titles.”It sounds interesting to me.”After completing his career grand slam by winning the French last year, Djokovic bowed out early at Wimbledon and lost in the U.S. Open final to Stan Wawrinka. He lost his world number one ranking to Britain’s Andy Murray at the end of last year and then suffered a shock second round loss to qualifier Denis Istomin at the Australian Open.Since then his form has been patchy although he has looked more like his old self in recent weeks.”I’m surprised Novak has fallen off as much as he has,” McEnroe said. “But it doesn’t surprise me that he might have lost a little motivation having accomplished what no one had done since Rod Laver last year.”But if he won the French it would not shock me at all.”last_img read more
