‘Won’t budge on citizenship Bill’

first_imgNational People’s Party supremo and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday said the party will continue to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. “Meghalaya was the first State to oppose the Bill and raise objection. We took the initiative to unite different political parties of the Northeast and made our voice heard in Delhi and ensured that the Bill was not introduced in Rajya Sabha,” Mr. Sangma said while campaigning for the party candidate in the Lok Sabha poll in Tura constituency. He claimed that the NPP is the only party that can unite the voice of the region and make it heard in Delhi. Mr. Sangma asked the people to vote for his party as “NPP is the party of the Northeast.” Three ralliesThe NPP chief on Monday flew to three different locations in the North Garo Hills and the East Garo Hills (Rongrong Abema, Mangsang and Chibonga) to campaign for his sister Agatha, the NPP candidate for the Tura Lok Sabha seat.Former CM Mukul Sangma is the Congress candidate for the seat while the BJP has fielded Rikman G. Momin.‘Wrong notion ’ The NPP chief alleged that the Congress is propagating a wrong notion that his party will partner with the BJP and ensure that the Bill is passed in the Lok Sabha. He added, “We will remain true to our commitment to the people of the Northeast and will never allow any Bill that would hamper the interest of our people.” Mr. Sangma also claimed that the NPP has “fulfilled” its promise made in the 2018 election with education as its top priority. “We had promised an education policy and we brought out the policy well before the completion of one year. For over four decades, the education department had to work without any policy or direction, we have scripted a direction to move forward to ensure better educational facilities in Meghalaya,” he said. The NPP chief said that based on the education policy, the Meghalaya government approached the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs and was accorded 11 Eklavya Residential Model Schools, out of 50 such schools across India. He said that if Ms. Agatha was elected as an MP, she will add to the initiative started by the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government and will voice its concerns in the Parliament.last_img read more

Young England stifle Neymar’s Brazil

Singapore Grand Prix: Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc Secures Pole Position Over Lewis Hamilton

first_img Charles LeclercferrariFormule Onelewis hamilton First Published: September 21, 2019, 9:39 PM IST Singapore: Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc secured pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix on Saturday as he looks to claim a stunning hat-trick of wins after triumphs in Belgium and Italy. The 21-year-old will be joined on the front row by championship leader Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes, with Leclerc’s teammate Sebastian Vettel rounding out the top three, ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas. Despite winning the last two races on power-friendly tracks, Ferrari had been given little chance of competing under the floodlights at the demanding 23-turn layout in Singapore. But Leclerc and Vettel tore up the script to gatecrash what was expected to be a Mercedes and Red Bull party.”I’m extremely happy about today. It was a good lap but I lost it a few times,” Leclerc said after completing a 1:36.217 second final lap.”I have to thank the team. We brought some new bits that worked properly. I worked hard after a bad Friday and today it paid off,” added Leclerc, who recorded his fifth pole position of the season.Hamilton holds a 63-point lead over Bottas of Mercedes in the title race with seven rounds remaining. The Briton said he would adopt an aggressive approach to Sunday’s race in search of a ninth victory of the season, as he seeks a sixth world championship.”I don’t know where Ferrari picked up their pace but they did a great job,” said Hamilton, who lapped in 1:36.408.”I’m really happy to be on the front row with them. Tomorrow we can be aggressive.”Vettel has suffered an erratic season while his rookie teammate has shone for the Italian team. The German was quickest in the first half of the final part of qualifying until Leclerc and Hamilton edged past him.”The final attempt should have been better but I was able to improve run by run. Maybe I peaked too early,” Vettel said.Red Bull’s Alex Albon will start sixth on the grid, ahead of Carlos Sainz, Daniel Ricciardo, Nico Hulkenberg and Lando Norris.Dense smog from forest fires in neighbouring Indonesia had floated over Singapore in the past week, sparking concerns the F1 could be affected.Air quality hovered around “unhealthy” levels in parts of the city Saturday evening but only a light haze was visible and did not affect the race.LATE SURGEThe late season surge represents a vindication of sorts for Ferrari, who were impressive in pre-season testing but failed to take that form to the track until after the series returned from its summer break at Spa.”It’s even better than we hoped,” Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto told reporters.”The race is tomorrow and we shouldn’t forget that but it’s always nice to start at the front in Singapore. I still believe Mercedes are very strong.”His counterpart at Mercedes, Toto Wolff, was surprised by Ferrari’s pace.”This is a circuit we thought the Red Bulls and Mercedes would battle for pole. The Ferraris are fast, they did a good job and we have to get our act together tomorrow,” the Austrian said.”The statistics are against us but the race has not started,” he added. Canadian Grand Prix: Sebastian Vettel pips Lewis Hamilton to grab pole position

first_imgFerrari driver Sebastian Vettel produced a stunning final lap to clinch pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix on Saturday.Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton looked set for a record-extending 86th pole – and a record seventh in Montreal – but Vettel found extra speed in the final sector of qualifying. After crossing the line, a euphoric Vettel broke out into impromptu singing on his team radio. Moments later Hamilton came over to congratulate him and the German driver was clearly relieved to finally show some of his best ability.”I’m full of adrenaline,” Vettel said. “The last few weeks have been tough for us. The car felt good. I hope we can carry that into the race.”Great to see these two duelling againBring on the race! #CanadianGP #F1 pic.twitter.com/Hq0FVnvc1EFormula 1 (@F1) June 8, 2019It was the 56th pole of Vettel’s career and first since the German GP last July – where he crashed in the rain comfortably leading the race and effectively handed victory and the momentum of the title race to Hamilton. In warm and sunny conditions, the four-time F1 champion was 0.2 seconds quicker than Hamilton and about 0.7 faster than teammate Charles Leclerc. It was only Ferrari’s second pole in seven races this season, the other going to Leclerc in Bahrain. It was Seb’s fifth pole in MontrealHere’s how he did it #Fit4F1 @pirellisport #CanadianGP pic.twitter.com/IyIN1yJtYVFormula 1 (@F1) June 8, 2019″Congratulations to Seb, he deserves it and hopefully I’ll have a better race from my side tomorrow,” Leclerc said.advertisementRenault’s Daniel Ricciardo was fourth with Red Bull’s Pierre Gasly in fifth and Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas in sixth after a poor performance in the last part of qualifying. The Finnish driver spun and was somewhat fortunate to avoid clipping the barriers.Ferrari is looking for its first victory of the season after six races and Vettel is well placed, having won from pole here last year. But the pressure is mounting on him to deliver, since he is without a victory in 14 races dating back to the Belgian GP last August.Mercedes has won all of the six races this year, with four victories for the five-time F1 champion Hamilton and two for Bottas.Hamilton, who qualified fourth last year and finished the race in fifth, felt Ferrari did have the edge in qualifying.”I don’t feel disappointment. We gave it everything. They were faster and in the last sector they were killing us,” Hamilton said. “I’m glad I was able to split the Ferraris (on the grid). We’ve got some great fans here, so hopefully we can put on a great show.”However, it could be a tough race for Mercedes because the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve – named after the late father of 1997 F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve – has several long straightaways which could advantage Ferrari given its superior straight-line speed.”We are strong on the long run pace and hopefully tomorrow will be the same and we can have a good run,” said the 21-year-old Leclerc, who joined Ferrari this season and is looking for the first win of his highly promising career. It proved to be a good day for Vettel, who has faced a lot of criticism this season and in the past two years when he made crucial mistakes and lost both F1 titles to Hamilton. It’s the first pole of the season for SebAnd just LISTEN to how much it means to @ScuderiaFerrari #CanadianGP #F1 pic.twitter.com/9H6e0eQRSjFormula 1 (@F1) June 8, 2019Earlier Saturday, he was fastest ahead of Leclerc in final practiceHamilton set the quickest time with about 10 minutes remaining in third practice, but the Mercedes driver was then beaten by Leclerc before Vettel went even quicker.STROLL’S FRIGHTThere was a scare for 20-year-old Canadian driver Lance Stroll in P3 after the back of his Racing Point car burst into flames. He was unharmed and the team later confirmed it was an engine failure.
